Facts about Certification
Certification in Ontario is a relatively simple process: first, 40% of a unit that seeks to certify as a union must complete cards indicating that they would like to form a union. Shortly thereafter, a vote would be held that certifies if 50%+1 of the votes cast favors forming a union.

For many years, UTFA leaders argued that a faculty association that was not a union had advantages that outweighed the advantages of certifying as a union. As a result, decades of UTFA leaders never sought certification. UTFA's own history does not suggest that this period of time is any worse than previous periods of contentious relations between the faculty and the administration.

Some advantages flow from our current Memorandum of Agreement between UTFA and the university administration.
